GIRONA
In the province of Girona, in northeast Catalonia, tourism is the past, present and future. This area has pioneered active, cultural and gastronomic tourism.
The province is famous for its coastal landscape and the charm of its capital. To the north of the province lie the Pyrenees; a natural paradise and the border with France and Andorra. The charm of the mountain regions comes to the fore in the character of their towns and Romanesque churches. From the snow-capped summits to fertile valleys, nature lovers will find an ideal setting here to enjoy their holidays, and a wide variety of sporting activities; from skiing to walking, mountain biking and golf - to mention but a few.
The Costa Brava, the best known area of the province is an area for Spanish sun and beach tourism, with excellent infrastructures and outstanding natural beauty. Its capital Girona, has long been considered one of the wealthiest cities in Spain. Add to this its enviable location, its proximity to the coast, Barcelona and the French frontier, and you can understand why the city has become an important business centre.
Historical Gerunda still retains its ancient legacies, the influences of the cultures which have left their stamp on the city, the streets and alleyways of the old town centre hide the secrets of the city behind their walls. The mark of six centuries of history and the presence of Girona’s Jewish culture has made the city one of the most important sites for Jewish culture in Europe.
Many buildings reflect the cultural importance of the city, not to mention its attraction for tourists. Above all others the cathedral stands out as the pride of its townsfolk.
